Mantchombe Producers and Marketing Cooperative
Society is a group of farmers that have agreed to consolidate their parcels of
land to create one large customary estate (366 hectares) to leverage on large
scale commercial farming. The cooperative is located along the
Chikwawa-Chapananga road, approximately 5km from Chikwawa District Council
Headquarters. The cooperative is in Mitole Extension Planning Area (EPA) which
is under Chikwawa District Agriculture Office of the Shire Valley Agriculture
Development Division (SVADD). The cooperative was established with government
support through the Shire Valley Transformation Programme (SVTP) funded by the
World Bank, African Development Bank (including Nigeria Trust Fund and TAAT), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), and the
Global Environmental Facility (GEF). Mantchombe was registered on 29th
March, 2022 as cooperative society (Registration Certificate No. 1739) under
the Cooperative Societies Act (CAP. 47:02). The aim of the Cooperative is to
achieve economic empowerment and well-being of its members through a jointly
owned commercial enterprise. The cooperative has a membership of 687 with 324
males and 363 females and Board comprising 9 Directors. Unlike what has
traditionally been happening in Malawi, management of the cooperative will be
outsourced from a private Professional Agribusiness Company which will manage
commercial production activities on behalf of the farmers.

Currently, targeting production of red speckled beans grain (kholophete), maize
grain and bird’s eye chilies (peri peri).
