Mulambe Cooperative
is located nine kilometers south of Chikwawa Boma in the area of T/A Katunga in
Chikwawa District, in the Southern Region of Malawi. The Cooperative covers 1,177
Hectares of the project area
The Cooperative is
one of the first cooperatives to be incorporated with support from SVTP in the
programme’ s impact area. The Cooperative is fully incorporated and registered
with the Ministry of Trade and Industry-Registrar of Cooperatives and is a recognized
legal entity. Its membership comprises 2,909 land owners within the Nyamphota
Irrigation Block in the SVTP area. The members have consolidated their land
parcels to form a smallholder owned commercial farm enterprise. Each individual
member is obliged to pay an annual membership, fee currently set at MK10,000
(US$9). Members are identified by their national identity cards (IDs) and the
Cooperative provides for members to trade their share through disposal or
trading of their parcel of land (which has been mapped and registered through
the customary land registration process).
The Cooperative will produce commercial
products such as Soy beans, Sorghum, Groundnuts and Mangoes.
